This is honestly the best series I’ve ever signed up for. I feel like so much of influencing is a secret and this bts look at it is fascinating and so beneficial. Thank you!

When you say collab. Does this apply to where you promote a product like on LTK / reward style and you get a percentage of what is sold? Or is a company paying you a flat fee to promote this item? When you promote teeth whitener or the magic spoon cereal are you getting a percentage of sales? What’s the most lucrative? Thx . Enjoying these articles.

A collab is a negotiated flat fee. Sometimes there are performance bonuses, but usually it’s just a flat fee. This may seem counter intuitive from a brands perspective, but it actually isn’t if you dig into the details. I can explain more if enough people are interested in that level of granularity.

rewardStyle has a 2-part business model. The both act as an agency that connects brand and influencers, and they provide a platform for affiliate links. Brand collabs tend to me more lucrative, but it really depends on the influencer. Most do both.

Thanks for all these info gems! I’d be interested to see what info is typically included in media kits and the formats they are presented in.

Can you elaborate on the "confidence interval" and why you'd select one % over the other? I think we're missing that piece of information.

The confidence interval is sort of like a proxy for the probability the range is correct. 68% means that if there are 100 accounts, 68 of them will fall within the range (assuming a standard distribution). The higher the confidence interval, the larger the range you will get. I suppose AP Statistics, or an entry level university class on statistics might be a pre-rec for this concept. If you Google “what is a confidence interval in statistics” you should be able to understand it after a couple of minutes of reading or watching a YouTube video :) Hope this is helpful 🙃

What percentage on Instagram, regular users, are successful at this? It seems like everyone is making $$, but they percentage is probably visually inflated.

It’s definitely follows a Pareto distribution top 20% make 80% of the returns and the top 20% of the 20% make 80% of the 80% and so on.

Can you go into what the “media kit” consist of or should consist of?

It depends on the type of influencer. For an Instagram influencer, some of the key stats that are included are: average Story Views, average impressions on latest posts, average reach on latest posts, and engagement %. Honestly a lot of agencies now a days just ask for screen shots of influencers insights tab directly from Instagram.

How do you grow your IG following to 200,000 so you can start influencing?

Expand full comment
Steven Houghton Jr's avatar

You don’t need 200,000 followers to start influencing. Number of followers is mostly just a vanity metric. Reach and impressions are far more important. For example, @lolo_web has about 395k followers, but she has AMAZING engagement. Her engagement is more reminiscent on an account with a million followers.

The ways to grow on Instagram are always changing. Now it actually one of the best times to grow an Instagram account because of the introduction of Reels.

I can do a mini course on growth soon.
